About Our Courses
The courses listed below are either ‘Basic’ or ‘Advanced’ courses. You are free to take any course at any time, there are no prerequisites.
The Association of Law Enforcement Chaplains issues Basic and Advanced Certification upon completion of the requirements.
Required for basic certification: 6 basic courses, 2 elective courses and FEMA courses.
Required for advance certification: 5 years of chaplain experience, 6 advance courses, 2 elective courses. Must complete or have completed FEMA Courses.
Any courses you have taken ‘in-person’ do count toward your certification requirements.

Basic Courses
Intro to LE Chaplaincy
To understand what law enforcement chaplaincy is, best practices and pitfalls take this course and see if this ministry is for you. You will have a clear understanding as to what the chaplaincy involves, how best to start up a program and how to set up the program for success. This is a starting point to one of the most amazing ministries you can be a part of, enjoy the course.
Chaplain Confidentiality
This course will cover the above and more with respect to the legal, moral, ethical, and professional obligations in your chaplain role.
When is a communication that you have with law enforcement officers, witnesses, victims, or others considered confidential or privileged? What is confidentiality vs privilege? What types of communication does a privilege cover? Who can assert privilege? Are there exclusions to confidentiality? What about liability?
Building Relationships with Your Officers
As a chaplain it is important to have a good relationship with your officers. Building relationships is one of the key components to having a successful chaplaincy program that serves the men and women of an agency. This course will teach some very important aspects of building good relationships, the ethics to consider in doing so and describe the benefits of having good relationships.
Death Notification
Death notification are one of the most difficult aspects of chaplaincy work. This course will teach the key steps to deliver the news of a loved one’s death to family members. In the course students will learn the best practices on how to handle death notification so it can be handled effectively, compassionately and with a ministry of presence.

Unfortunately in our world today family and domestic violence has risen considerably. Domestic calls are known to be among the most risky in law enforcement. This course will give Chaplains a basic knowledge of domestic violence, things to be looked for and how to best understand how a victim is treated, suffers and why they do not just leave the abuser.
Advanced Courses
Domestic and Family Violence
Unfortunately in our world today family and domestic violence has risen considerably. Domestic calls are known to be among the most risky in law enforcement. This course will give Chaplains a basic knowledge of domestic violence, things to be looked for and how to best understand how a victim is treated, suffers and why they do not just leave the abuser.
Emotional Survival for Law Enforcement
Policing is one of the hardest occupations in the world. There are many challenges which come with the job that involves trauma, violence, abuse, ugliness of humanity and everyday life stressors that take a toll on our men and women. Oftentimes emotionally officers check out, suffer, find themselves alone and hurt. Learn a bit of emotional survival and how it affects your officers and how you can help by being more aware.
Child Abuse
U.S. Child welfare authorities look into the safety of more than 7.5 million kids annually. Of those, around 3 million children received an investigation or alternative response from child protective services agencies. In 2022 it was estimated an estimated 1,990 children died from abuse and neglect in the United States, a number consistently on the rise over the previous five years. The trauma of child abuse causes children to lose their sense of safety and trust in the world and harms their relationships. Left untreated, the trauma of child abuse can lead to: mental health problems, behavioral changes, substance use, increased risk for violence against oneself and others; and/or physical health problems. This course will touch on these aspects and help chaplains understand more about child abuse to help identify, prevent or address child abuse.
Police Crisis Negotiations and Tactical Aspects
Police hostage or crisis negotiations are a law enforcement technique used to defuse dangerous situations and bring about non-violent resolutions. Crisis negotiators are often regular police officers who have received special training. Crisis negotiators work in teams and use a variety of tactics and negotiations to achieve their goals. Their goal is to ensure that everyone involved emerges alive. As chaplains it is good to have a sound understanding what goes into this work and how chaplains can minister to officers in such teams/situations.
